The Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law on January 5, has repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) – two rules that previously reduced Social Security benefits for clients receiving certain pensions.
Here’s what’s changed:
- No more reductions. Clients receiving pensions from CSRS, NYSLRS, TRS, and Railroad Retirement will no longer face reduced Social Security benefits.
- Settlement impact. This may directly affect how retirement assets and income are assessed in both current and future cases.
